A downloadable tool for Windows
Simple RETRO Light Novel MAKER (v0.9.11) (New patch!)
(Texto en español abajo!)
ENGLISH :
This program was born from wanting to make an interactive story and not finding any software that matched what I needed: a simple node editor, no code, no tags.
I’m not a programmer — I only know the basics of HTML and CSS. I developed this program with VibeCoding solely so it would work for me, especially since my moral/ethical compass doesn’t exactly point in favor of AI. But as days (and weeks) went by, I put so much work into it that it grew way more than I expected, and I think it might also help others who want to tell a story in this medium.

This program is inspired by the original Umikeno novels, where there’s a background image, a low-opacity color layer (usually black), and text on top. You could say it has more in common with a digital book than with a visual novel — which is why I chose not to call it “Visual Novel…” and instead named it “Light Novel MAKER.”
The code is a mess (seriously), everything is held together with threads and improvised solutions — but it works! The system is mainly built around nodes, though it also includes a list editor for those who prefer a linear workflow, plus a collapsible data panel with more customization options: you can change the background, upload custom sounds, adjust background-color transparency, choose fonts, set text-appearance speed, use effects like screen shake, etc.

While using it, I realized it needed features like automatically organizing nodes (ctrl + shift + g), enabling snap-to-grid, and arranging the scene however you prefer (hide/shrink nodes to reduce visual clutter).
The program can export your story as a simple HTML file and import it back whenever you want to continue editing. The HTML works on any device, and it even saves your reading progress. It can also be exported as a PDF — just like the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books.

In the Settings menu or the Help button you’ll find all the information you need, including shortcuts. The interface includes both Spanish and English translations!
There’s no intention to profit from this. I’m simply sharing something I needed myself, and maybe someone else will find it useful or feel inspired to create. If you want to experiment with interactive stories without programming or memorizing tags, this program is for you. The goal is to make the tool as friendly and simple as possible — that’s why there are multiple editing options, so everyone can use whatever suits them best.
Thanks for reading! And remember: if something doesn’t work… it’s probably my fault.

PATCH NOTES:
Hey! New patch! 0.9.11 2 new features requested by users added!
1) You can now mark an SFX to finish playing before continuing to play the following nodes/paragraphs.
2) New “Randomizer Node” feature! This new type of node allows you to randomize where a choice leads. Allowing you to randomize the nodes to which a paragraph is connected.
I hope it's useful and works properly :) Thanks for the comments.

this is dope! Itd be dope to add like npc's to talk to and add relationship statuses
Hey! Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, what you suggest is not in line with the vision of the software itself. I hope the program is still useful to you for other ideas!
ok cool!
Wow! Your engine is the best, because of its simplicity. And I like how the end product looks. Some engines tend to have a tacky way of presenting buttons/options. This engine makes crisp looking novels.
I have to feature requests (if possible). Which would make this engine (in my opinion perfect).
1) May you add a tick box or a way to ensure that readers can NOT move ahead to the page until the SFX/sound file finishes playing. I intend to use the SFX option to upload mp3 narration. But, currently, people can keep going before the SFX file finishes playing
2) Would you consider adding a "node randomiser" which selects a random node from a set/group of node options. For example: if someone selects a choice, the choice will be attached to a "randomiser" which has multiple nodes that are slightly different.
That second feature would allow authors to make replayable novels, with slight variations (randomized variations). Where the nodes carry slightly different dialogue/text
Do you think these 2 features are doable? I personally think they will take your engine to the next level. If version 1 can include that, I can't imagine anything else that I would need... because, everything else is already there.
Thank you very much for reading my feedback and requests
Hello! I'm glad to finally see some feedback!
I like your recommendations and I think I could try to add them. I don't have access to a computer right now, but in a week or two I'll try to do so and upload the update.
Thank you for your comment :)
I'm glad you found it useful and intuitive.
It's very light and well-made.
I am very happy to hear from you. I think those 2 things I suggested will make it possible to start making the kinda novels that I've ben wanting to make. You've built a special engine here. Thank you!
I will keep checking for an updated version.
Hi! The new patch is now available (0.9.11) adding the two requested features and fixing an HTML import bug!
I hope it works and helps you tell your stories! I'd love to see the results in the future :)
Thank you very much! You are amazing, I have never seen a responsive dev like you, and I just downloaded the updated version.
I will definitely share projects with you.
I am very happy!
